Buffalo Bills Training Camp Notes (2023): Day 8
As I write this after getting stuck in traffic from the Clarence rest stop to the Buffalo Bills stadium, I wonder why they don’t give you a third lane on the thruway. But, that isn’t the topic of this article. I’m here to discuss the news and notes from the Red and Blue scrimmage Friday night.
With a packed house of 35,000 people to watch a scrimmage game, the place was loud and bumping the whole time. It felt like a larger crowd than a preseason game. Let’s get into some notes from the scrimmage.
1.) The Inactives
The PUP guys, Taron Johnson (general soreness), Matt Milano (general soreness), Isaiah Coulter (knee), and Bryan Thompson (concussion) did not practice.
2.) Notable Starters
Tyrel Dodson and O’Cyrus Torrence were with the starters at MLB and RG, respectively.
3.) Rapp scattered around
Taylor Rapp played with the starting and second-team LBs as well as nickel CB.
4.) DT injuries
Ed Oliver didn’t take part in team work, working only towards the side. Kendal Vickers also went down midway through practice with an injury.
5.) CB2 Battle Update
Dane Jackson started at CB2. Kaiir Elam and Christian Benford continued working with the second-team. This could be the way it goes heading into Week 1 as well.
6.) Ken Dorsey continues to conjure up these things called… “screen plays”
One notable one came from the third team offense, when Matt Barkley threw to KeeSean Johnson for a first down.
7.) Bills DL took the OL’s lunch money
Besides a 45-yard rush from James Cook to open practice, nothing went too far from the LOS all day. Very good work from Poona Ford and DaQuan Jones.
8.) The wrong Allen got most of the QB reps
Kyle Allen took reps with the ones and twos and it was… interesting. There was at least four muffed snaps from Kyle Allen/Mitch Morse. One went over Allen’s head to Latavius Murray in goal line work. That ended up as a TD.
9.) Goal-line Offense looked very nice
Fans saw touchdowns by starters Damien Harris, Stefon Diggs, and Trent Sherfield. Sherfield also caught one from Kyle Allen later on.
10.) Returnman Battle Update
Deonte Harty continues to get the majority of reps at returner. Andy Isabella, Darrynton Evans, and Khalil Shakir got some work as well.
11.) TEs were alright, but not as good as prior practices
Unlike the last time I wrote a training camp article, the TEs didn’t have as good a day this time. Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid dropped passes (the one to Kincaid was behind him) to open up scrimmage. However, Quintin Morris had a nice red zone TD on a Matt Barkley pass.
The Buffalo Bills will be back at Highmark Stadium next week for their preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
