Buffalo Bills Training Camp Notes (2023): Day 2
The Buffalo Bills entered their second day of 2023 training camp at St. John Fisher University on Thursday. They aren’t in pads yet, so it’s hard to evaluate some positions clearly. But, at Buffalo Fanatics, we evaluate everything and come to premature assumptions. So, let’s take a look at what happened at day two.
1.) Notable First Teamers
- RB: James Cook
- Slot WR: Khalil Shakir, Dalton Kincaid
- RG: Ryan Bates
- MLB: Terrel Bernard
- Boundary CB: Tre White, Dane Jackson
Dorian Williams (weak side) and Taylor Rapp also saw time with the starting LBs.
2.) Notable Second Teamers
- QB: Matt Barkley, Kyle Allen
- RB: Damien Harris, Latavius Murray
- Slot WR: Deonte Harty
- RG: O’Cyrus Torrence
- Boundary CB: Kaiir Elam, Christian Benford
- Nickel CB: Siran Neal, Taylor Rapp
3.) Notable Inactives
Cameron Dantzler didn’t practice. Came out on the field late without his helmet, and didn’t take part in any stretches with the team.
Today’s news would explain why.
4.) Returnman Battle Update
Deonte Harty and Darrynton Evans took the returner reps today.
5.) Both sides of the ball showed some interesting formations
On defense, Taylor Rapp lined up at box Safety, deep Safety, and LB. Kameron Cline split from his normal DE position to line up in the secondary behind the DB.
On offense, we saw formations with Dawson Knox taking a handoff lined up as a RB, Gabe Davis and Knox in the backfield with the RB motioned out wide, and even Davis lined up in the backfield, James Cook split out wide, and Reggie Gilliam at Josh’s hip.
6.) Defense had a day
The Buffalo Bills pass rush feasted against the right side of the OL. First, second, third team, it didn’t matter who lined up, they got to the QB.
Groot blew by Spencer Brown to force a quick Josh Allen throw, which lead to a pick-6 by Jordan Poyer after Trent Sherfield slipped on the wet field. Not to mention Allen’s two other INTs: one by Cam Lewis and another by Terrel Bernard.
Shane Ray also continued to turn heads, literally and figuratively. Had Tommy Doyle on a swivel when lined up with each other.
7.) A nice day for the TEs (and Reggie Gilliam)
The TEs as a position group had a huge day, but Dalton Kincaid was most notable among them. The 2023 first-round pick blew by defenders like a WR and got up to the football like a TE. Quintin Morris also had a fantastic one-handed catch working with the twos.
Meanwhile, as the sun broke the rain that rolled in, Reggie Gilliam caught a pass, leaving all FB haters speechless. He left the haters in complete shambles after catching another pass later on.
8.) Is there a backup Safety battle brewing?
We saw Cam Lewis line up at Safety most of the day with Taylor Rapp, Dean Marlowe, and Zayne Anderson. Jordan Poyer, Micah Hyde, Taylor Rapp, and Damar Hamlin look to be the locks. But, if they keep a fifth Safety again this year, it could be up for grabs.
