Since this post was written Star Lotulelei opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns over COVID-19.
On the most recent The Bills Guys vidcast co-host Steve Mathes nicknamed the Buffalo Bills defensive line the “Blue Wave”. This is because head coach Sean McDermott believes in a heavy rotation, or “waving”, of the players on his defensive front.
The Buffalo Bills defensive line, outside of Ed Oliver if he reaches his ceiling, doesn’t have much star power. However with names like Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison, Trent Murphy, AJ Epenesa, Quinton Jefferson, Star Lotulelei, Harrison Phillips, and Vernon Butler there is plenty of average to above average NFL players.
Lets take a quick peak at the early projected depth chart:
Hughes – Lotulelei – Oliver – Murphy
Addison – Phillips – Butler – Jefferson
While you won’t see names like Watt, Bosa, or Donald along this front, it is a far DEEPER unit than most of those teams with more name recognition. Players in Buffalo will be able to perform with maximum effort on every play because they know when they are gassed the guy coming in for them is just as capable. The competition will bring out the best in these guys as well.
By season’s end they won’t be a “Blue Wave, they will be a “Blue Tidal Wave”.
