The Patrick Mahomes Trade Revisited

During the 2017 NFL Draft the Bills would make a trade with the Chiefs allowing KC to draft Patrick Mahomes. How has this trade aged since?

It’s 2017, the Buffalo Bills own the 10th overall pick, Bills are on the clock. With Patrick Mahomes & Deshaun Watson still on the board, they get a call from the Kansas City Chiefs about a trade. KC would trade their 1st rounder (27th), a third-round pick, and 2018 first-round pick to move up & select Mahomes. Let’s dive into the trade and the draft picks in 2017 & beyond.

Who did the Bills leave on the board?

Patrick Mahomes
Deshaun Watson
Marshon Lattimore
Marlon Humphrey
TJ Watt

Lattimore & Humphrey would’ve been home run picks, but how many people would look back at this draft and go, “Man, I wish we had them over, Tre White”? Probably not many. It’s super fun to debate who’s better between Patrick Mahomes & Josh Allen, and it will be fun to watch their careers play out as they face each other for the next 10+ years. And as of lately, Allen has been better than Watson. TJ Watt would’ve been a phenomenal pick, but looking at the roster right now, I would still take Tre.

Bills picks

1. 27th: Tre White
2. The Bills would trade their third round pick to the Atlanta Falcons to move up into the second to select Dion Dawkins.
3. Their 2018 first round pick from the Mahomes trade would be part of the move up to select Tremaine Edmunds

Dion Dawkins became the franchise Left Tackle for this team protecting Allen’s blind spot, and is currently under a four year/$58M deal.

Allen has been the best QB Buffalo has had since Jim Kelly, and in 2020 helped lead the team to their first playoff win since 1995 in a phenomenal season led by him & Stefon Diggs. Now, one year later & $250M richer, Allen is fighting for another AFCCG appearance this season; after a blowout victory over the New England Patriots, where he lead them to seven TDs in seven drives.

Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes has become arguably the best QB in the league for the past three seasons, and beat the San Francisco 49ers to win Super Bowl LIV, has an MVP (2018), first-team All-Pro, four Pro Bowl nominations, and was the passing TD leader in 2018. He has helped lead the Chiefs to another division championship, sitting at 12-5 and fighting for another AFCCG appearance. Mahomes totaled 4,839 yards, 37 TDs, and 13 INTs.

The Bills will look to improve their record vs the Chiefs Sunday as they’re 1-3 since 2020 (including playoffs). The Chiefs are currently favored by 2.5 points, with the O/U being 55.
