The Buffalo Bills should Trade Up in this years NFL Draft, and Here’s Why

Here is why the Buffalo Bills, should trade up and not down in this years NFL Draft.

With the NFL Draft less than two weeks away, Buffalo Bills fans are starting to form opinions about who the team should select in the 1st round. More importantly, the common theme isn’t actually who the team should choose, but rather where in the first round the team should select a player. It seems as if a large percentage of Bills fans want the team to trade back later into the 1st round and try to acquire more picks. The logic behind this is simple, add more value picks. The emphasis on the word value is where Brandon Beane has a chance to change the dynamic of this year’s draft.

By adding “Value” picks in rounds two or three, you are taking a player that can compete for a starting position at some point in the future. Some NFL GM’s see these players as depth picks, while others can be seen as projects. Adding more picks and players from the second round and on is a benefit for teams that are starting the rebuilding phase. Trading back to acquire more picks can be beneficial to a team, but can also cause a team to miss out on something special. Case in point, 2017 NFL Draft, Buffalo Bills are on the clock with pick number ten. Sitting on the big board are two young studs and an absolute position of need for the team. Quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.

We all know what happened next, the Bills swapped picks with the Kansas City Chiefs and missed out on Patrick Mahomes. The Bills did get number one starting corner Tre’Davious White with the 27th pick. White has been a top ten cornerback since entering the league. Now, there is no way to have forecasted that Mahomes would be the league MVP. The team could have drafted him or Watson and would have been two years ahead of “rebuild” mode.

Now here is the reason to trade up in this years NFL Draft. The Buffalo Bills as a whole, are in much better shape as a roster overall. The team is only 1 or 2 game changers away from being a contender… this year. So if you use that mentality, and look at the roster as a whole, what do the Bills need? The biggest need is defensive tackle. The way to change that is go up and get the best run stopping DT in this years draft. His name is Quinnen Williams, from the University of Alabama. Williams would be starter, and a huge upgrade over any defensive tackle currently on the roster. In 2018 alone, Williams managed 8 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss. The Bills have 10 picks in this years draft. This gives Brandon Beane enough fire power to move up and grab a generational player.
