On the latest episode of Smoke Break our host, Z-Bot, got into the latest football news. The USFL began, “The Match” was announced. After that, we take a look at who the experts think the Buffalo Bills pick at 25th overall. Let’s get into it, shall we?
The USFL: Will It Last? (9:35)
The USFL is officially back. The new spring football league officially kicked off at 7:30pm on Saturday, April 16th. It impressed, to a degree. The league, born from the ashes of the original USFL, featured many well-known names and a great production value. There is still a market for spring football, currently uncontested due to the unfortunate ending to the XFL in early 2020. By embracing gambling, they’ve opened their sport to a new market. It is infinitely more viable because of the revenue generated from this. It may not feature talent at the NFL level, but it’s definitely still entertaining.
Football is America’s game now and the USFL, despite competing with the NBA playoffs, the end of the NHL season, and the beginning of the MLB season, got plenty of views. As the season progresses and the USFL gains consistent support, we’ll better understand it’s longevity. The only true concern is the return of the XFL in 2023.
Buffalo Bills Mock Drafts: What The Analysts Say (34:29)
In his mock draft, Charles Davis of NFL.com has us taking Kyler Gordon, the Washington cornerback, at 25th. Though some may wish for it, taking a receiver would be a luxury. Definitely not a bad pick, but we have a need that must be addressed.
PFF follows this theme, and has us snagging CB Andrew Booth out of Clemson at 25, despite him going before we get to pick in a lot of other drafts. In this deep of a cornerback class, we could be taking the sixth or seventh cornerback off the board by the time our first round pick is submitted. Is Booth our guy?
Lance Zierlein, also of NFL.com, wants the Buffalo Bills to select CB Kaiir Elam out of Florida. Zierlein believed that the Bills would have their pick of cornerbacks, and had Elam high on his list.
Sports Illustrated went against the grain. They had us selecting interior offensive lineman Tyler Linderbaum out of Iowa. An athletic and mobile lineman, he could be a long-term solution at either guard or center. Getting him would ignore our need for a cornerback, but we’d be expanding our Super Bowl window. He would provide quality depth for Saffold, Morse, or Bates in 2022.
Z-Bot went over even more analysts’ selections, from a wide range our big names and companies. A whole host of them, such as Mel Kiper, Yahoo.com, Peter Schrager, and Danny Kelly, all weighed in.
As well as all that, Z-Bot touched on “The Match” (25:22), as Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes face off against Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. For that and more, check out the latest episode of Smoke Break on the Buffalo Fanatics YouTube channel.
