Josh Allen Shows His Ceiling

Josh Allen had as lowly a day as you could imagine against the New England Patriots in Week 4. Allen threw for 153 yards, had a completion percentage under 50%, and accounted for three interceptions, all before being knocked out of the game with a concussion. Fast forward to Week 11. Allen threw for 256 yards, had a completion percentage of 63.6 and accounted for four touchdowns in leading the Bills to a 37-20 victory of the Miami Dolphins.

Sunday’s outburst against the Dolphins wasn’t a total aberration. Since the New England disaster, Allen has thrown 10 touchdowns to one interception. Over the past five games, Allen has thrown eight touchdowns, ran for four more, and thrown no interceptions. He hasn’t thrown an interception in his last 163 pass attempts. He currently has a 2:1 touchdown to turnover ratio with 20 total touchdowns and 10 total turnovers.

Josh Allen is the first quarterback with five consecutive games with two touchdowns and no interceptions since Russell Wilson in 2015. He joins Wilson, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Drew Brees as the only quarterback to do that since 2011.

Critics who say Allen isn’t an NFL quarterback need to keep their opinion to themselves for now. Josh Allen has proven that he is in fact an NFL quarterback. The question now is whether he can consistently blend his “fearless” persona with the more disciplined approach he has flashed over the past six games. Today was a preview of what it looks like when he does just that.

If Brian Daboll can continue to strike a balance like he did today and the Bills can acquire a bonafide #2 wide receiver not named Isaiah McKenzie this off-season, Allen’s development may be much less stressful to witness. Barring an utter collapse the rest of the way, Allen will be “the guy” for the Bills through at least next season. The next step for him will be doing what he did today consistently week in and week out and against better quality competition.
