Cam Phillips: Member of the Final 53?

After signing as an UDFA last year, former Virginia Tech Hookie and current Buffalo Bills wide receiver Cam Phillips may have a better chance of making the final roster than one might expect.

Standing at 6’0′” flat, Phillips is a fast and speedy receiver with great hands. While at Virginia Tech, he was a First-team All-ACC selection in his senior year. He had a combined 3,226 yards, along with 17 total touchdowns throughout his collegiate career.

His NFL career, so far, has not amassed the same success. After signing with the Bills in mid May of 2018, he never really had a solid place on the Bills’ roster. He was part of the mandatory roster cuts on September 1, signed with the practice squad, promoted to the active roster on October 18th, and waived again on November 5. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Bills on New Years Eve, 2018. In the two games Phillips appeared in, he hauled in one catch for nine yards.

Phillips has a long road ahead to climb with making the final roster. With the additions of Cole Beasley, John Brown, Duke Williams, and more, Phillips’ chances may seem minimal. However, Pro Football Focus had some high praise for the diamond in the rough.

Cam Phillips went undrafted out of Virginia Tech and signed with the Bills prior to the 2018 season. He appeared in two regular season games in Weeks 7 and 8, logging 24 total snaps out of the slot and contributing one catch for nine yards against New England.

Phillips had a promising season in his final year with the Hokies, earning an 85.8 overall grade that ranked seventh among draft-eligible receivers. With a productive offseason, Phillips has a chance to provide continued depth for the Bills’ receiving corps.

With mandatory minicamp going on right now and summer training camp vastly approaching, we will get a better idea of what the final 53 will turn out to be and how it will impact Cam Phillips’ future with the team.
