Gage Azeez:

Pick 62 (Round Two): Chazz Surratt, LB – North Carolina

With the 62nd pick in the 2021 Buffalo Fanatics mock draft, I select Chazz Surratt, linebacker from UNC. At this moment, I am of the belief that Matt Milano will walk in free agency, leaving a starting roster spot open for the taking at outside linebacker for the Bills in 2021.

Chazz Surratt is 6’3″, 220 lbs. and is 23 years old. (The same age as soon to be 4 year pro Tremaine Edmunds.) He joined UNC as a QB prospect out of high school, but suffered a wrist injury that sidelined him in the fall of 2018. The injury, coupled with poor QB play, led him to switch to outside linebacker prior to the 2019 season.

How did the position change turn out? He recorded 115 tackles (66 solo), 6.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 interception in 2019. He received First-Team All-ACC honors and was the runner-up for ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Pretty impressive for a kid in a new position. His 2020 stats were similar, having posted 91 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 INT. Surratt is projected as a three down outside linebacker in a 4-3 scheme. I am intrigued by his athleticism and football IQ.

We saw what McDermott was able to do with a safety from Boston College in the fifth round of the 2017 draft. I would love to see him mold Surratt, a former quarterback, who possesses similar traits and playing style.
