Buffalo Bills: Things We Know This Week

“I don’t need him to block, I need him to run! Which he does, like a bat out of hell. Which takes the pressure off of my offense. Okay? I got fifty-two Tarzans in that locker room; I could use a Jane!”

“Insomnia is a glamorous term for thoughts you forgot to have in the day.”-Alain de Botton

British philosopher Alain de Botton nailed it. My own inquietude sometimes cultivates subject matter.

Thirty-two teams, seven rounds, 224 young men who, today, are about to become players in the National Football League. A day where lives are changed. fates are decided, dynasties are born, and the clock is always ticking. Of course, I’m talking about… Draft Day.“- Chris Berman (Quote from the Movie Draft Day)

“The NFL draft is going to be this Thursday. That’s a huge night for college players. That’s the night they start being paid over-the-table. Jay Leno

Some people chuckled when Leno cracked that joke about college players on the verge of turning professional. Others took offense to the comedian’s joke. I found it whimsical and no harm done because it was Jay Leno.

“We’ve won the offseason. I would challenge any team. I think we’ve won the off-season.” – Rex Ryan

Now Rex Ryan felt good about the players the Bills selected in the draft. That being said, it was very premature making that claim before a snap of the ball. Many people do not like to rate a draft until a couple of years go by. Some lower picks may take some time to grow into an NFL player. Some higher picks need time to be declared a success and not a bust. But before Rex opened his mouth, it would have been wise to see training camp and preseason and then the real pressure of the NFL. His claim certainly did not carry over to the regular season as his two Bills seasons were quite short of being playoff bound.

Tre’Davious White blossomed immediately where Sean McDermott could have boasted, yet he was humble.

Buffalo received many grades of a ‘B’ for the 2021 draft as well as Rousseau in the first round. Boogie has been referred to as a “steal”.

“Obviously we took Rousseau on night one, “You’re not anticipating taking another pass rusher, but Boogie was the best player on our board and so we followed that. You can never have enough pass rushers. We just felt the value was too good to pass up and we’re excited to get it.“- Brandon Beane

Bill Polian built great teams in Buffalo, Carolina, and Indianapolis. He had his own checklist when drafting pass rushers that were successful throughout his career.

First step quickness.  Can you beat an offensive tackle off the ball? Can you translate speed into power? The ability to change direction…  If you can change direction, you have a repertoire.” – Bill Polian

Polian fired the late Hank Bullough mid-season during his first season following his promotion to GM.

We keep beating ourselves, but we’re getting better at it.” – Hank Bullough

‘Good old Hank’ has many classic quotes in his short stint in the Queen City. I can’t resist another:

“It took the sails right out of our wind.” – Hank Bullough

I shall steal shamelessly from the 1980 Gold Medal hockey team’s coach Herb Brooks. He commanded Assistant Coach Craig Patrick to blow the whistle again as they had the team skating for their poor performance. “Again. Again. Again.”

I certainly will. Here’s a brilliant comment about the late Ralph Wilson:

“I’m not a yes guy. He knows that when I hired him.” – Hank Bullough

Polian hired his friend and colleague from their days in the CFL. Hiring Marv Levy was the only head coach in Buffalo he needed to hire.

“Ability without character will lose. The Bills are going to be a team of high character. That stamp I will push very hard. I hope we can convey that to our fans and project something very special to the rest of the nation.”Marv Levy

“I have yet to be in a game where luck was involved. Well-prepared players make plays. I have yet to be in a game where the most prepared team didn’t win.” – Urban Meyer

The new head coach of Jacksonville may need some luck with Heisman Trophy winner and former Denver first-round draft pick Tim Tebow playing Tight End.

“So the Broncos drafted a linebacker in the 1st Round two years in a row. Only last year they had the guy play quarterback.” – Sports Pickle

Marv Levy elucidated on the Bills division title this past season:

“Celebrate for a short while, then go back to work.”-Marv Levy

Things we know about the Buffalo Bills this week

Grade I give them: A for effort. Time will tell.

I am semi-retired leaving my enjoyable 24 year management career due to multiple health issues. My dad retired from The Buffalo News after 49 years. I have been an avid fan for quite some time. Got that Marv Levy Fight Song In My Head for absolutely no reason.
