Buffalo Bills: Things We Know This Week

Today’s lesson is going to canvass how the word “not” can totally change most  sentences in the English language.

Jeff Spicoli will pass my class. Jeff Spicoli will not pass my class. 

“What, are you people on dope?”

Let’s simplify things. Simply smart and simply not smart are almost identical in appearance when reading. The word not certainly differentiates the two in reality, though. Let us take a look at a handful of examples where the two are as opposite as night and day. Pretty clever how strategically placed was the word handful which contains Mr. Hand‘s name. Totally unrelated. Totally unnecessary. It has been said, so no need for chiming in again pointing out my shortcomings. Enough of that. No bullying. No building a Bully. Rex Ryan Has left the building. I digress.

Giving Leslie Frazier the title of Assistant Head Coach is simply smart. Mayor Bloomberg spending  550 Million USD, more than all other candidates combined, only to spark interest with some success by voters in American Samoa Territory, is simply not smart.

Hiring a former head coach as one of Sean Mcdermott’s first hires when assembling his staff three years ago, is simply smart. The Sabres trading away an elite center who put up stats in Buffalo and had many intangibles for little in return is just part of the story. Ryan O’Reilly proceeded to win the Conn Smyth trophy with the Blues as playoff MVP as well as getting his name forever etched on  Lord Stanley’s Cup the very next season after being a Sabre, is simply not smart.

Brandon Beane intending on addressing Tre’Davious White’s contract proactively attempting on renewing it early and often is simply smart. Traveling to various regions currently and not being aware of the status of the spreading virus is simply not smart.

Being a team that is actively involved in courting one of the several experienced number one level UFA wide receivers who can help Josh Allen  based on cap space and need is simply smart. Panicking over the virus that for the average healthy person is simply like getting the flu is unneeded anxiety that causes others to panic and simply not smart.

Drafting a Wide receiver allowing time to develop without pressure and expectations to be Josh Allen’s top target is simply smart. Joe Theismann saying “Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.” is simply not smart.

I declare success executing multitudinous learning with a plethora of takeaways. Class dismissed.

Things we know about the Buffalo Bill this week:

• The current move from 16 to 17 games per season may  not be enough for every team owner. WGR 550 Sports Talk Radio has reported that it appears some owners would prefer the players did not vote in favor of the current proposal. It has been implied that some owners may desire 18 games during the regular season and reducing the meaningless pre-season game count to only two. Hopefully, that will not be a option if the players vote the current CBA on the table a done deal.
• Brandon Beane and Sean Mcdermott have both been clear on multiple occasions that they need to upgrade the offense and score more points. But for those assuming that is strictly at skill positions like Wide Receiver, Running Back, and Tight End, think again. Beane has been vocal that in order to make plays, run better, throw better, and catch better, the offensive line has to be an asset blocking. They learned that the hard way in the 2018 season as all of the quarterbacks who played were running for their lives and quarterback injuries were a season impacting factor. Lesean McCoy had his worst career season behind that line, which could partially be why we now have Singletary and did have Frank Gore. The line was a major improvement last year with a handful of free agent signings as well as drafting Cody Ford. Some of those free agent signings were one year deals as well, as lineman they already had are set to become free agents soon. As much as the line improved from 2018 to 2019, the games they lost (including the playoff loss) had many breakdowns in blocking. So, by the process of reviewing samples from last season, the line protected adequately when beating bad teams. The line was good enough when they beat some of the stronger defenses. When they met top tier teams, which obviously is a given come the playoffs, they somewhat resembled the 2018 squad. Just saying…
• Matt Harmon of Yahoo Sports claims that Buffalo is the most logical landing spot for former first overall pick, Jadeveon Clowney. The Bills did make that big UFA acquisition several years ago signing Mario Williams. Premier pass rushers are hard to find. This is exactly why they demand so much money. The position is up there in most instances with the quarterback position. I would prefer a big splash signing of Amari Cooper while drafting a wide receiver as well as an edge rusher. Immediate help is needed for Josh Allen by an established number one receiver. Development time for a rookie wide receiver benefits the receiver, quarterback, and the entire team. They can sign some second tier defensive lineman and draft one who may drop. They have the cap space to sign a big splash on both sides of the ball, but then would need to retreat, saving funds to sign draft picks, undrafted free agents, and of course start signing their own ” must keep” players.
