Buffalo Bills team needs heading into FA

Published

on

The Buffalo Bills are currently sitting at -$1.3M in cap space, with a few holes to fill. Last off-season, the Bills did a good job of fixing some holes, but still have some glaring needs that need to be addressed. With cap wizard Brandon Beane needing to make room for draft picks & incoming free agents, this could look like a different team heading into September.

Cornerback

The Bills are very slim at CB, and it showed in the divisional round against the Chiefs. Pending Free Agent Levi Wallace stepped in and filled the CB1 role nicely, but after him you’re looking at Dane Jackson and Cam Lewis; two corners with little to no starting experience. The Bills will need to look to FA to add some depth here. They may even need to use a high draft pick to fill the CB2 spot. Luckily for the Bills, this is a deep draft class too.

Interior Defensive Line

The Bills showed in 2020 that a run stuffing DT was needed. Heading into 2021, they got Star Lotulelei back from his opt out; however the run D was still below average and Star was eventually replaced by Harrison Phillips. Currently, the only Bills DTs still under contract are Ed Oliver and Star Lotulelei. The Bills will need to bring back Harrison, along with some free agents to help compete for a starting job.

Pass Rush

The Bills spent the entire off-season building up the pass rush, bringing in four players. However, the sack totals and QB pressures still weren’t where they needed to be. (Mario Addison lead the team with seven sacks.) The Bills will need to step away from the quantity of pass rushers they bring in, and start looking towards the quality of players they land. This is a deep draft/FA class for pass rushers, and adding a big time player is absolutely needed.

Interior Offensive Line

It took the Buffalo Bills most of the season to find a IOL combination that that worked, with Ryan Bates and Daryl Williams manning the inside. The Bills will need to bring in a couple players to provide depth, along with some starting competition at LG. (They will also have to decide whether to re-sign Ryan Bates and Ike Boettger.) They currently have Jon Feliciano and Cody Ford as depth, with a replacement for Cody Ford likely needed. This is a position the Bills will need to focus on to give both Josh Allen and the run game an added boost.
