As the Buffalo Bills try and get salary cap compliant over the next couple of weeks, they’ll need to rework the contracts of some of their stars. The team will need to free up $36-41M to get under the salary cap, before even getting the chance to re-sign any of their own free agents, or bring in any new guys. Last week we discussed some cut candidates. Now, let’s look at some players they can restructure and extend.

Restructure Candidates

Josh Allen

Allen has a $47M cap hit for the 2024 season, and a base salary of $23.5M. According to Spotrac, restructuring Josh’s contract would save the team $17.9M in cap space, and lowering his cap number to $29M. That would get the team down to around $25M over the salary cap.

Dawson Knox

Knox signed a four year/$52M extension back in 2022, but hasn’t lived up to the deal. However, the Bills can’t move him without a big dead cap penalty. That leaves the Bills with just one solution, restructuring his deal. They can turn some of his base salary into a bonus, and lower his cap number down to $11.5M. That would save the team $2.7M in 2024 cap.

Matt Milano

The Buffalo Bills just simply can’t wipe their hands clean of Matt Milano, despite him being 29 years old and coming off of a serious injury. Unfortunately for them, that means kicking some money down the road. The Bills can restructure his deal to lower his cap number down to $10M, and save $2.1M in cap space. Milano becomes a free agent in 2027, when he turns 33 years old.

Tre White

Restructuring a player at his age and with his injury history may not be the best move the Bills can make. But his dead cap situation doesn’t exactly help us move him this year, and it does save them $3.6M. It remains to be seen what kind of Tre White they’ll be getting next year, but after his second season-ending injury since 2021, the Bills may need to start looking for his replacement. With two more years left on his contract, he may not see another deal with Buffalo.

Restructuring their contracts saves the team $26.4M towards the cap, and puts them over the cap by $10M.

Extension Candidates

Dion Dawkins

Dawkins is in the final year of the deal he signed in 2020, and has a cap number of $16.6M for the 2024 season. Extending Dawkins could help spread some of this years money over the course of his new contract, and would lock up our franchise LT for the foreseeable future.

Rasul Douglas

Douglas also becomes a Free Agent in 2025, and has a $9M cap number for the 2024 season. If the Bills can extend Douglas before next off-season, they’ll be able to shift that money into future years, and cut his cap hit down this year.
