Pick 30 (Round 1): Jaelan Phillips, Edge

I am making this pick with the prediction that the Bills let Milano walk and sign OT Daryll Williams. That’s not what I hope happens, so please don’t get mad at me.

And wouldn’t you know it, of the top 10 available players on The Draft Network’s mock draft machine, three of the first four are offensive tackles. Pour honey down my pants and call a beekeeper. Fuck you, karma! The rest are one wide receiver, two edge, one running back, one quarterback, one interior defensive line, and one safety.

Obviously, I’m out on QB, OT, and I am not a fan of us drafting an RB in the first round, at least not this year. I think this Josh Allen guy might be good, so I’m going to pass on a quarterback as well. I’m also going to pass on WR this high because I’d like to give John Brown another season as WR2 assuming he can stay healthy. So it’s down to edge, safety, and interior defensive line. The DT is a 3-tech, so I’m going to pass on that. The safety is projected to be a starting free safety which we already have so I’m going to pass on that as well.

Between the two edge defenders, I went with Phillips. He is rated higher and based on his profile appears to be more versatile and has more experience as a starter. I believe we need more youth at defensive end. Not only do we have two starters in their thirties, but we are also losing Trent Murphy (not that anyone cares) who was in his late twenties. AJ Epenesa showed improvement towards the end of the season, and the Bills need to add to that because fans are hungry for a pass rush that can turn all those pressures into sacks.
