Buffalo Bills Exercise Ed Oliver’s 5th Year Option
Brandon Beane woke the sports world up today. He confirmed (on WGR 550) that the Buffalo Bills would pick up Ed Oliver’s 5th year option, keeping him here through 2023. Oliver stands to make $10.753 million from this to-go sized extension.
Brandon Beane has worked the 5th year options pretty well in the past. Both Tre White and Josh Allen had theirs exercised, and were immediately extended by the Bills within the next 12 months. That’s where this could get interesting. Will Beane make the cap disappear again for Oliver?
The Buffalo Bills have loads of big contracts coming up: Oliver, Tremaine Edmunds, Gabe Davis, Devin Singletary, and Jordan Poyer; just to name a few. We’ve already seen what super-mega QB contracts do to teams. Both Green Bay and Kansas City had to let their A+ receivers walk due to money issues.
This seems to be the ultimate “wait and see” option pick up. Ed Oliver has been pretty damn good since being drafted 9th overall in 2019. He has, without a doubt, become a staple of this franchise. In 40 starts, the former Houston Cougar has racked up 12 sacks, 21 TFLs, and a couple of hurries and batted balls. Oliver will be worth $10+ million a year when he hits the open market in 2023. Will Beane commit to that? We’ll have to wait and see.
