Well, the time has finally come. The Buffalo Bills have relieved OC Ken Dorsey of his duties, with QB Coach Joe Brady taking over as interim coordinator. At 5-5, going into the toughest part of the schedule, a change was definitely needed. But it may have come too late to salvage this season. Let’s take a look at what we’re getting in our next OC.

Meet Joe Brady

Joe Brady will be Josh Allen’s third OC after Brian Daboll left for NY. Before coming to Buffalo to coach Allen, Brady previously ran the Carolina Panthers offense from 2020-2021, before being Matt Rhule’s scapegoat for a poor 2021 season. In college, he was the passing game coordinator and WRs coach when Joe Burrow skyrocketed into stardom. Brady started his coaching career as an assistant under Sean Payton with the New Orleans Saints in 2017-2018.

What to Expect Going Forward

This will be the same offense that was ran under Ken Dorsey, but it might be ran a little bit tighter. With it being mid-season and a short week going into the NY Jets game, this isn’t likely going to be some drastic change where we see new terminology and a whole new offensive playbook. Brady will hopefully light a fire under the offense in a way that Dorsey wasn’t able to. Because, let’s face it, those meltdowns in the press box only made him look like a child.

After Monday night’s disaster of an offensive performance, HC Sean McDermott came to the podium looking upset with how the offense played. Judging by the comments he made and his facial expressions, it gave us clues into what may be coming in the days and weeks after that game.

“It’s been the better part of 10 games. I have seen the inconsistencies of 10 games. That’s the evaluation right now… I need some time. I’m obviously not happy [with the offense].”

For whatever reason, the Buffalo Bills offense couldn’t get going under Ken Dorsey. After the Miami Dolphins blowout victory, everything went downhill. Josh Allen got in a funk that he couldn’t break out of, and nothing worked. The offense seemed to be broken. Plays that came easy under Brian Daboll seemed to be impossible for Ken Dorsey. Josh Allen hand-picked Ken Dorsey to be the team’s OC this past off-season. The Bills interviewed other candidates, but you always knew Dorsey was the shoo-in for the job.

Josh Allen’s word held a lot of weight to the Bills as they searched for Daboll’s replacement. You have to wonder if they’ll get Josh’s input on the OC again this year, and how much they’ll take it into consideration. If Brady can turn this offense around and they go back to being a dominant team again, that would give him a pretty strong case to be OC.

Can the 2023 Offense Be Salvaged?

In recent weeks, the coaching staff has talked about going away from an up-tempo based offense to try out other styles of play. Which is fine, but those other styles of play aren’t working. It may be different under Joe Brady, who was able to succeed with the high powered LSU offense that had Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, among others. This Bills offense feels very similar to that, where Brady rose to fame. Maybe we get the same production down the stretch?

Von Miller said last week that it isn’t time to sound the alarm yet, but it’s close. Have we reached that point where it’s time to panic? After that Broncos game, you could say yes and nobody would argue with you. But Joe Brady calling the offense may be the spark this offense, and team, needs as we enter the back half of our season.

Either way you look at it, it was time for a change. Whether we benefit from this through the last seven games of the year or not, it’s nice to see this regime trying to right a wrong. Could more be next? It feels like the Buffalo Bills could end up cleaning house if they don’t make the playoffs this year.

Joe Brady will run the offense against these teams:

  1. Vs. NY Jets
  2. @ Philadelphia Eagles
  3. @ Kansas City Chiefs
  4. Vs. Dallas Cowboys
  5. @ LA Chargers
  6. Vs. New England Patriots
  7. @ Miami Dolphins
