Today is July 16 or 716 Day. This is a day for Western New York to show your love for our area and give to local charities. 716 Day began several years ago as just a day to celebrate Buffalo and show our pride. It has since morphed into a day to give back to our local community. As Bills fans, we have a history of charitable giving. For instance, when Andy Dalton clinched our first playoff berth in decades, we donated $415,000 to his charity. When Nashville “won” best fanbase, we donated $14,000 to their charity. When Josh Allen’s grandmother passed away, we donated over one million dollars to Children’s Hospital. So, it stands to reason that we want to show up big for 716 Day.
Donation Matching “Power Hours”
Several corporations have sponsored “Power Hours” where they will match donations made at that time. For example, the Buffalo Bills and Sabres will be matching donations from 12-1 pm and again from 7-8 pm. For the first hour of donation matching, they will be matching all donations up to $15,000. The second hour will be $20,000.
Dion Dawkins Event
There is also an event hosted by Dion Dawkins, which takes place on Hertel between Norwalk Avenue and Saranac. It is free for everyone and includes family-friendly events between 4-6:30 pm. During this time, there will be a sleigh and there might even be an appearance from Santa. From 6:30 pm until 10 pm, it’s time for the adults to have some fun. There will be vendors like Lloyd’s Taco Factory, Spot coffee, and GetSomked716. On top of the vendors, there will be a beer tent and yard games. There are activities for people of all ages and should be a great time.
Charities and Donations
There is every kind of charity that you can imagine, from sports to health and wellness. Some of the charities that speak to me include Western New York Youth Tackle Football Federation Inc., Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Erie County SPCA. Find charities that speak to you the way that these speak to me. Every dollar counts and stays in our community. So, show your Buffalo pride and donate.
