Thursday Thought: The Buffalo Bills are all in.

Josh Allen

Coming into the 2020 offseason it was well known that it would be an important offseason for the Buffalo Bills. With a large amount of cap space and a plethora of pick, the Bills were destined to make some big moves. The question always was just how big were these moves going to be?

I wrote a Thursday Thought a few weeks back telling Bills fans to lower their expectations on how much the Bills were going to spend. That Brandon Beane’s specialty was finding the hidden gems of free agency and that Buffalo had to lock up their players due for an extension.

Although this remains true one thing I said was not. The Bills went out and made the big splashy move when they traded four draft picks, including this year’s first-round pick, for Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

On top of all of this, the Bills have been signing most of their free-agent additions on two-year deals. What does this mean? The Bills are loading up while Josh Allen is still on a rookie contract. The Bills believe that they can make a run in the next two seasons. This week’s Thursday Thought: The Buffalo Bills are all in.

That’s right the Bills believe they can not just win now, but contend for the division and even more. These moves are not like other moves the Bills have made. Usually, we have seen the Bills sign players that can help now but also in the long term. However this offseason, these moves reflect a change in mindset by the Bills. They are all in on winning now.

The opportunity is there as we’ve seen many teams in the past few seasons load up while their quarterbacks are on rookie contracts. The 2012 Seahawks, 2017 Eagles, 2018 Rams, and 2019 Chiefs all have done the same. The results have been quite good as all of these teams at least made it to the Super Bowl.

Ultimately, this all comes down to one man, Josh Allen. If he can take the necessary steps forward and improves his game the Bills will have a chance to be something special in 2020. They already have an elite defense and now have an excellent receiving core. All the pieces are in place to make it happen.

Who would have thought that the Bills would be in the conversation to win the division or even contend for the AFC title? The Bills are knocking on the door of being a legitimate powerhouse for the next few years to come. Take it all in Bills fans because there is something special brewing on One Bills Drive.
