Thursday Thought: Do not be intimidated by the Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are a good team and should not be overlooked. However, the Buffalo Bills should not be intimidated by the Texans.

Remember a little while back this season, just before Thanksgiving, when I wrote a Thursday Thought about why not to be intimidated by the Dallas Cowboys? I wrote about their struggles against good teams and overall tension in the organization. Well, here we are back in the playoffs and back in the state of Texas, and the narrative remains the same. This week’s Thursday Thought: Do not be intimidated by the Houston Texans.

Let’s just face it, the Buffalo Bills can win their wild card match up with the Texans. I’m not just saying this because I’m biased or have been a fan of this team for my entire life. They have a legit chance to win and here are some reasons why.

To start, the Texans are wildly inconsistent. As much as they play up to their competition with good teams, they play down to the same level as inferior ones as well. One week the Texans handle their business against the Patriots, the next week they get dismantled by the Broncos. What Texans team will show up in the wild card? Who the hell knows.

Going off the topic of inconsistencies, the one thing that has been consistent for the Texans has been losing in the postseason. Since 2015, the Texans have only won one playoff game. That one win was against the Oakland Raiders who were playing their third-string quarterback Connor Cook. The Texans have not gotten it done in the playoffs under Bill O’Brien which should give Bills fans a little bit more confidence going into this game.

Lastly, the Texans feature a defense that is not that great. Their secondary is very banged up and has been beaten badly at times this season. Also, the once-great pass rush for Houston has not been the same this season. No more Jadeveon Clowney and J.J. Watt has been injured most of the season. The Texans’ defense is beatable, even by an offense at Buffalo’s caliber.

On top of it all, the Buffalo Bills can play with any team in the league. The defense is elite and can stop any offense. The offense can play well against a quality opponent. The coaching staff is one of the better ones in the NFL. The Bills have the pieces to get their first postseason win in 25 years.

If Josh Allen can play well and Brian Daboll lets Allen just play “fearless” the Bills have a good chance of leaving the lone star state with a win. Devin Singletary will be someone to watch for as he could be the “X-Factor” for Buffalo. It would be huge if the Bills can get him involved in the passing game and put some pressure on the Texans linebackers.

This is it, it’s win or go home. This team isn’t just happy to make this far, they want more than just that. They want to win. It should be a fun one this Saturday at NRG Stadium.
