Buffalo Bills Reunite With Tight End Lee Smith

The Buffalo Bills have signed tight end Lee Smith to a three year deal. The former Bill is back in Buffalo where he was from 2011-2014.

The Buffalo Bills have signed 31-year-old tight end Lee Smith to a three-year deal. This report is according to the Official Buffalo Bills social media accounts and website. The deal is worth up to $9 million. The deal includes fully guaranteed money for the first two years.

Smith was drafted in the fifth round in 2011 by the New England Patriots. He was cut in camp and then picked up by the Bills after. He was a member of the Bills from 2011-2014 and has been with the Oakland Raiders since. Smith will contribute on special teams and only as a blocker. He has never had more than 12 catches in a season in his 8-year career. Smith has also never had over 100 receiving yards in a season. Smith’s extraordinary blocking skills will only help the offensive line and the running game.

The signing of Lee Smith will help the tight end room even more. Smith appears to be a roster lock along with Tyler Kroft or else he wouldn’t have been signed to a multi-year deal with guaranteed money. What remains to be seen now is how many tight ends the Bills will keep on their roster and who those tight ends will be. Jason Croom, Dawson Knox, and Tommy Sweeney will most likely battle for the third and possibly fourth tight end spots on the Bills roster. Brandon Beane has suddenly taken a poor tight end room and made it competitive. He has added plenty of quality depth who can all compete for roster spots. Also, he has added tight ends who are all good at different aspects of football. Smith is a good blocker, Knox is a solid pass catcher, and the rest of the tight ends can do a little of both. Beane has once again shown he loves versatility, depth, and competition. Smith’s blocking, special teams ability, and experience will help the Bills greatly and add more depth to the tight end position for the next three years.
